One Mind with Many Connections - John J. Neely

& Journeyman Printer

In 1982 I entered the printing business as a pressman's helper. We were known as flyers. We caught the papers as they came flying off the press. I fell in love with the energy of the pressroom. Building size machines cranking out thousands of Newspapers an hour. Loud, Fast, Awesome. A year or two later found me working in prepress. No more highly physical labor. Now it was time to use my mind. So I set out to be the best opaquer possible. Then Stripper. In the early 1990s camera rooms and paste-up artists were becoming less needed. I went to school to learn Quark Xpress, Photoshop and Illustrator. I spent several years as Art Director servicing companies like Honeywell International, Novartis, and Aventis Pharma.
